Hola Tracy, muchas gracias por vuestro tiempo. ¿Qué tal estáis?

Estamos genial. ¡Ahora mismo estamos de camino de Marsella a Zaragoza! ¡¡Francia nos despidió anoche en el cherrydon club!!

Venís de Nueva York. Cada vez que escucho las palabras Blues y Rock, lo primero que me viene a la mente es Chicago y el sur de los EE.UU. ¿Puedes contarnos un poco sobre la escena rock de Nueva York, y cómo comenzasteis como banda?

Después de Nashville Pussy, me tomé unos años de descanso de la música, y decidí que quería formar una banda de covers de blues para poder volver a tocar la guitarra con Tbone (Tina T-Bone Gorin, guitarrista compañera de banda). Así empezó la idea. Simplemente algo muy informal, y sin expectativas. En el momento en que pusimos nombre a la banda había cinco opiniones para cada sugerencia. Yo quería nombrar a la banda The Jane Lee Hookers al principio, incluso me aseguré el dominio, pero a la banda no le gustó lo suficiente y optamos por Jane Lee Hooker como tributo y como un juego de palabras sobre John Lee Hooker. Pensamos que todos entenderían la referencia, pero nos sorprendió que no todos conocieran la música de John Lee Hooker.

Rollin’ es vuestro tercer álbum, fue lanzado hace un año y fue escrito durante la pandemia. ¡Felicidades! Es fantástico. ¿Cómo fue el proceso de escritura del álbum? Veo que fue totalmente diferente a como lo soléis hacer habitualmente, debido a las restricciones.

Sí, estábamos confinados en Nueva York y tuvimos que reunirnos en el patio trasero de Dana para escribirlo. El edificio donde tenemos nuestro local de ensayo se cerró, todo fue cerrado. ¡Era la primera vez que escribíamos sin volumen! ¡Ron tocó la batería con cubos de basura! Fue muy surrealista: sentarse afuera y tratar de mantener la distancia unos de otros. Que tiempos tan locos...

El álbum fue autoproducido ¿No estáis con ningún sello en este momento?

Tan pronto como llegó la pandemia, negociamos con Ruf Records para que nos permitiera producir el álbum nosotros mismos por nuestra cuenta. No íbamos a permitir que una pandemia mundial nos impidiera lanzar nueva música.

Comenzáis una nueva gira europea, pero es vuestra primera visita a España ¿Cómo son vuestras espectativas del público español?

¡Estamos ansiosos por llegar a España! Hicimos muchas giras por Alemania, pero nadie pudo llevarnos a España. Ahora que estamos con Teenage Head booking tenemos 14 fechas en España y estamos encantados!

¡Guau! Catorce fechas en España. La verdad es que tengo un gran respeto por los músicos como vosotros que están todo el día en la carretera. ¿Qué es lo que más te gusta de las giras y lo que menos te gusta?

¡Lo que más nos gusta es estar juntos, y tocar música todas las noches! Estar de gira es realmente duro, pero realmente ayuda el amor de las personas con las que estás de gira. Me encanta poder tocar mi guitarra todas las noches en el escenario y conocer gente nueva todas las noches. Somos un grupo bastante feliz. Por alguna razón, también me gusta mucho, cuando nos despertamos, desayunamos y nos subimos a la furgoneta para el próximo concierto.

Durante los viajes escuchamos música y audiolibros. Nuestro tour manager, Heavy Dee, tenía el libro de Van Halen “Running with the Devil” de Noel Monk y lo escuchamos juntos en dos viajes largos y ¡fue IMPRESIONANTE!

Se habla de las dificultades de las bandas de Estados Unidos para hacer giras en Europa por el aumento de precios. ¿Habéis notado ese aumento en lo que respecta a las giras?

Realmente no hemos notado ningún cambio, excepto que la gente en Europa parece más feliz de poder disfrutar de música en directo que antes de la pandemia. ¡Todos se perdieron 2 años de música en vivo!

Por otro lado, me imagino que la carretera será una gran inspiración a la hora de crear canciones y compartir experiencias, ¿componéis habitualmente durante las giras?

(Risas) de hecho escribimos muchas canciones divertidas para cantar mientras conducimos. Son canciones tontas que comenzamos a cantar sobre cosas estúpidas: escribimos una canción sobre cómo encontrar un buen lugar para aparcar, una canción sobre el código de seguridad de la puerta de nuestro hotel en Chamberry, escribimos una canción sobre un hotel Ibis en Francia. Sabemos cómo entretenernos. ¡Pobre Dee!

¿Tenéis nuevo material para vuestro próximo trabajo?

¡Sí! En este momento estamos disfrutando de la gira presentando ‘Rollin’, ¡pero tenemos nuevas canciones en el set, y preparándonos para el próximo álbum!

Hello Tracy, thank you very much for your time. How are you?

We are great.  We are right now on the drive from Marseille to Zaragoza!  France gave us a lovely sendoff at Cherrydon club last night!!

You come from New York. Whenever I hear the words blues and rock the first thing that comes to my mind is Chicago and the south of the U.S. Can you tell us a little bit about the New York rock scene and how you started as a band?

After Nashville Pussy I took a few years off from playing music, I decided that I wanted to start a blues cover band so that I could play guitar again with Tbone.  That is how the idea started.  Just very casual and with no expectations.  At the time we named the band there were 5 opinions on every suggestion.  I wanted to name the band The Jane Lee Hookers at first-even secured the domain - but not enough of the band liked it and we went for Jane Lee Hooker as a tribute to and play on words on John Lee Hooker. We thought everyone would get the reference but it was shocking to us that not everyone knew the music of John Lee Hooker.

”Rollin” is your third album, which was released a year ago, and written during the pandemic. Congratulations, it's fantastic, how was the process of writing the album? I see it was totally different from how you usually do it because of the restrictions.

Yes, we were on lockdown in NYC and we had to gather in Dana's back yard to write it. The building where we have our rehearsal space was closed down, everything was closed down. It was the first time for us writing without volume! Ron played drums on garbage cans! It was very surreal: sitting outside and trying to maintain distance from each other. Such a crazy time...

I've seen that the album is self-produced, are you not with any label right now?

As soon as the pandemic hit, we negotiated with Ruf Records to permit us to produce the album ourselves at our own expense. We weren't going to let a worldwide pandemic stop us from releasing new music.  

Now you are starting a new European tour, but this is your first visit to Spain. What are your expectations from the Spanish public?

We cannot wait to get to Spain!  We've toured extensively in Germany but no one was able to get us into Spain. Now that we are with Teenage Head booking we have 14 dates in Spain and we are thrilled!  

Wow! Fourteen dates in Spain. I have great respect for musicians like you who are on the road all day long. What do you like the most about touring, and what do you like the least?

We like most playing music every night and being together!  Touring is really hard but it really helps to love the people you are touring with.  I love that I get to play my guitar every night on stage and meeting new people every night. We are a pretty happy bunch. I also really like for some reason when we all wake up and have breakfast and get ourselves into the van for the next show. 

During the drives we listen to music and audiobooks. Our tour manager, Heavy Dee, had the Van Halen book “Running with the Devil” by Noel Monk and we listened to it together on two long drives and it was AWESOME!!! 


There is talk about the difficulties for bands from the U.S. to tour in Europe because of the price increases. Have you noticed that increase when it comes to touring?

We haven't really noticed any changes except that people in Europe seem even more joyous to be at live shows than before the pandemic. Everyone missed 2 years of live music!


On the other hand, I imagine that the road will be a great inspiration when it comes to creating songs and sharing experiences, do you usually compose during the tours?

Haha, we actually write a lot of funny sing-along songs while driving. They are silly songs we just start singing about stupid stuff: We wrote a song about finding a great parking space, a song about the security code for the gate of our hotel in Chamberry, we wrote a song about an Ibis Hotel in France.... we really know how to entertain ourselves. Poor Dee!  

Do you already have new material written for your next work?

We do!  We're really enjoying touring in support of “Rollin” right now but we have new songs in the set and brewing for the next album!
