Entrevista a Aurium: 'Como todo comienzo, fue muy difícil para nosotros pero cuando amas lo que haces siempre encuentras el camino correcto'

Aurium es una magnífica banda de metal sinfónico proveniente de Serbia, desconocida para el público español y que tuve la suerte de descubrir gracias a Art Gates Records. El pasado 19 de junio publicaron su nuevo álbum "The Second Sun" (puedes leer la reseña aquí) Gracias al sello nos pusimos en contacto con su vocalista Dragica y el teclista Sinisa, que amablemente nos pusieron al día de la situación actual de la banda, todo lo relacionado con su nuevo álbum y como afrontan el futuro en estos momentos de incertidumbre.

Hola, muchísimas gracias por vuestro tiempo, que tal estais?
Hemos estado mejor y también peor, en este mundo tan caótico.
Es vuestro tercer álbum que tal está siendo la
acogida del álbum, pese a los tiempos dificiles que estamos viviendo?
En realidad, es nuestro segundo álbum de estudio, pero el tercer
lanzamiento en general. El primero es "Still Life" lanzado en 2015
para Miner Records de Suiza. Después de eso, lanzamos el EP "The Silent
Moon", que fue una precuela de "The Second Sun" con 5 pistas oquestales del álbum.
Tenemos muchas críticas increíbles al respecto, pero aún no
hemos podido promocionarlo en directo después de su lanzamiento debido a la pandemia,
por lo que aún no podemos dar una mejor respuesta.
¿Cómo estáis pasando la pandemia, como ha
afectado esta situación a vuestro país?
Actualmente no tenemos confinamiento (por ahora), pero los casos están
aumentando y la situación está lejos de mejorar q corto plazo.
La verdad es que no os conocía y no sé nada de
la escena Serbia, contadme un poco sobre vuestros comienzos, influencias y
sobre la escena Serbia que seguramente tendrá grandes bandas como vosotros.
Muchas gracias por estas afables palabras. La banda se fundó en 2012, y comenzamos
en 2014. Como todo comienzo, fue muy difícil para nosotros. Fue difícil
encontrar el camino correcto y decidir en qué dirección nos gustaría ir, pero
cuando amas lo que haces siempre encuentras el camino correcto. En el tema de las influencias, son bastante variadas, ya que cada
miembro aporta su propio gusto, una mezcla interesante de la vieja escuela y cosas
más nuevas, más comercial, por así decirlo.
Creemos que podemos continuar con
el estilo con el que estamos familiarizados llevándolo hacia nuevas formas y nuevas mezclas aportando
nuestro toque personal y así de esta manera mantener vivo el metal sinfónico.
Entrando ya en el aspecto de "The Second Sun" ¿Cuando lo grabasteis? ¿Como fue el proceso de
grabación?
Lo creas o no, fue grabado en 2016. En aquel entonces, (Dragica) todavía no era
parte de la familia Aurium. Nuestro tecladista Sinisa compuso la mayoría de las líneas melódicas para cada
miembro: bajo, guitarra, batería y orquesta. También escribió la mayoría de las
letras y líneas vocales. Después de la primera demo grabada, comenzaron los ensayos e hicieron algunos cambios en las composiciones.
El
álbum fue grabado y mezclado en el estudio
P3, excepto una canción "Son Of
The Morning Star" que fue
grabada en el estudio Citadela en Belgrado, y mezclada por Tero Kinnunen en Finlandia. Después de que se grabó completamente, la cantante
anterior Milica dejó la banda, por
lo que la banda decidió que volvería a grabar algunas de las voces, ya que
teníamos que crear videos para canciones particulares, y creíamos que sería
correcto mantener las voces de Milica
en otras canciones como parte de su magnífico legado.
Así que ahora tenemos el álbum con dos cantantes, el pasado y el
presente, así como nuestro dueto: ¡Leaden
Skies!
La verdad es que siendo honesto el estilo que practicáis no es el que estoy acostumbrado a escuchar pero me habéis encantado. Tenéis grandes temas, en particular"phasianide" es una obra de arte,
tiene mucho de Opera Rock y os vais a los ocho minutos, ¿Cuál fue la idea a la
hora de escribir el tema?
¡Gracias! Cuando comenzamos, solo teníamos que decidir qué género nos
gustaría hacer. Y ese era el metal sinfónico ya que estamos más
familiarizados con ese género. Como puedes escuchar, hay una gran diferencia en
nuestro estilo, ya que nos gusta mantener el "espíritu del tiempo" en nuestra música y evitar aquellas viejas influencias del 2000. Las nuevas generaciones escuchan, así que tenemos que
hablar su idioma pero mantener nuestra identidad musical.
“Phasianidae” es una canción
de amor en una forma compuesta, sin versos ni coros. Las letras hablan sobre el
amor verdadero y duradero que termina con la muerte.
Es vuestro primer álbum con Art Gates Records,
¿qué tal la experiencia?
Sí, este es nuestro primer álbum lanzado para AGR. Fue una experiencia
muy profesional y dedicada. Es un elogio el poder estar dentro de su roster.
Sois una banda con una "frontwoman" (realmente no me gusta mucho esa
etiqueta), ¿Cómo veis el papel a día de hoy de la mujer en la escena metal?
Yo (como otra 'frontwoman') lo veo como una espada de doble filo; En
un género dominado por los hombres, la creciente prevalencia de las voces
femeninas ha provocado un cambio, pero también una división.
Soy muy consciente de que algunas personas realmente se preocupan por la
apariencia primero, y escucharían a una banda con una cantante simplemente por
su apariencia o simplemente por la novedad. Esto podría ayudar a las
bandas a obtener más reconocimiento, pero muchos también los desacreditan de
inmediato por la misma razón, independientemente del talento y el trabajo real
que se les haya asignado.
Personalmente, creo que en un futuro acabará por desaparecer a medida
que la gente se acostumbre más a las mujeres que cantan en el metal. Quizás,
finalmente, no escuchemos la frase ‘female-fronted
metal band' más de lo que escuchamos 'male-fronted metal band’ (que no se escucha).
Supongo que debido a la crisis del coronavirus
aún no habéis podido presentar el álbum en directo. Teneis algunas fechas
cerradas para el futuro?
Muchos conciertos han sido cancelados y / o pospuestos, y hasta que la
situación se calme un poco, no se pueden hacer ciertas predicciones.
¿Habéis estado alguna vez en España?
Todavía no, ¡pero esperamos hacerlo! Nuestro público en España es tan entregado y apasionado que sería un sueño poder compartir ese energía y
sentimientos en persona.
Por último, cual es el futuro inmediato de la
banda, en cuanto a proyectos.
Descubrir cómo promocionar nuestro nuevo álbum en los tiempos del corona,
planificar otro lanzamiento de un single y, con suerte, pronto, planear nuevos
conciertos en Serbia / en el extranjero.
Por nuestra parte es todo, muchísima suerte

Hello, thank you very much for your time, how are you?
Been better, been worse; what with the world
being in utter disarray and all.
"The Second Sun" It is your third album, how is the album
being received, despite the difficult times we are experiencing?
Actually, this is our second studio album, but
third release in general. The first one is “Still Life” released in 2015 for
Miner Records from Switzerland. After that we self-released EP “The Silent
Moon” which was a prequel of “The Second Sun” with 5 orchestra tracks from the
album. We’ve got a lot of amazing reviews about it, but still haven't played any promotional shows after its releasing
due to pandemic, so I can’t give a better answer than this.
How are you passing the pandemic, how has this situation affected your
country?
Currently, there is no lockdown (yet), but the
numbers are rising and the situation is far from getting any better any time
soon.
The truth is that I didn't know you
and I don't know anything about the Serbian scene (Sorry), tell me a bit
about your beginnings, influences and about the Serbian scene that will surely
have great bands like you.
Thank you so much for these kind words. We
were founded back in 2012, started in 2014. As with every beginning, it was
really hard for us. It was hard to find
the right path and decide in which
direction we would like to go, but when you love something you always find the
right way or it finds you. When it comes to influences, they are rather varied,
since each member brings their own taste into the mix; an interesting blend of
old-school and newer, more commercial stuff so to say. We believe that we can
continue carrying the familiar style into new forms and blends with our
personal touch and keep symphonic metal alive in that way.
Getting into the aspect of your album "The Second Sun" when
did you record it? How was the recording process?
Believe or not, it was recorded back in 2016.
Back then, (Dragica)I still wasn’t a part of Aurium family. Our keyboardist Sinisa composed most of the
melodic lines for each member - bass, guitars, drums and orchestra. He also wrote most of the lyrics and vocal
lines. After the first demo recorded (at his place) they started rehearsals and
made some changes in the compositions. Album was recorded and mixed at P3
studio, except one track “Son Of The Morning Star” which was recorded in studio
Citadela in Belgrade, and mixed by Tero Kinnunen in Finland.
After it was fully
recorded, previous singer Milica left the band so the band decided that I would
re-record some of the vocals, since we had to create videos for particular
songs, and we believed it would only be right to keep Milica's vocals in other
songs as part of her magnificent legacy. So now, we have the album featuring
two singers - the past and the present - as well as our duet: Leaden Skies!
The truth is that to be honest the style you play is not the one I am
used to hearing but I have loved it. You have great songs, in particular
"phasianide" is wonderful, it has a lot of Opera Rock and you leave
after eight minutes. What was the idea
when writing the song?
Thanks! When we started we just had to decide
which genre we would like to nurture. And it was symphonic metal since we are
most familiar with that genre. As you can hear, there is a lot of difference in
our style, since we like to keep the “spirit of time” in our music and avoid
that old 2000’s vibe.
New generations are listening so we have to speak their
language but keep our musical identity. Phasianidae is a love song in a
through-composed form - no verses and choruses. Lyrics tell about long lasting true
love which ends with death.
It is your first album with Art Gates Records, how was the experience?
Yes, this is our first album released for AGR.
It was a very professional and dedicated experience. We are blessed to
be in their roster.
You are a band with a "frontwoman" (I don't really like that
label), how do you see the role of women today in the metal scene?
I (as another 'frontwoman') see it as a
double-edged sword; in a male-dominated genre, the increasing prevalence of
female vocals has caused a shift, but a divide as well. I am well aware that
some people really do care about the appearance first, and would listen to a
band with a female singer simply for her looks or just the novelty of it.
This
might be helping the bands gain more recognition, but many also discredit them
immediately for the same reason, regardless of the actual talent and work put
into it. Personally, I think it will end in the future, as people get more
accustomed to women singing in metal. Perhaps, finally, we won't hear the
phrase 'female-fronted metal band' any more than we hear 'male-fronted metal
band' (which we don't).
I suppose that due to the coronavirus crisis you still have not been
able to present the album live. Do you have any
dates closed for the future?
Many
shows have been cancelled and/or postponed, and until the situation calms down
a bit, no certain predictions can be made.
Have you ever been to Spain?
Not yet, but we sure hope to! Our Spanish
fanbase is so dedicated and passionate, it would be a dream feeling and sharing
that energy in person!
Finally, what is the immediate future of the band, in terms of projects.
Figuring out how to promote our new album in
the corona times, planning for another single release, and, hopefully soon,
planning new gigs in Serbia/abroad.
