Entrevista a Irdorath: 'creo y noto que el black metal se acepta cada vez más en todo el entorno metal, y eso me gusta.'

El pasado 1 de mayo, los austriacos Irdorath lanzaron su quinto álbum "The Final Sin" a través de Art Gates Records. Una banda de black/thrash austriaca con una gran trayectoria desde 2005, pero desgraciadamente desconocida para gran parte del público español.
Unos días antes del lanzamiento del álbum, nos pusimos en contacto con su lider Markus, (voz y guitarra) quien gustosamente se ofreció a contestar una serie de preguntas acerca de los inicios de Irdorath, sobre su último álbum y sobre el futuro inmediato de la banda tras la ansiada vuelta a la normalidad. Una entrevista cargada de honestidad y donde se refleja perfectamente la gran pasión por lo que hacen.

Hola, muchas gracias por la entrevista y por el interés en
Irdorath.
¿Qué tal está siendo recibido el lanzamiento
de los nuevos singles?
La respuesta de los medios y los fans sobre nuestro nuevo disco “The
Final Sin” está siendo muy buena hasta ahora, no nos podemos quejar. Además, el lanzamiento de nuestros singles y videos ha sido muy bueno. Aunque en ese momento todos los problemas
relacionados con la crisis del Covid – 19 distrajo la atención de la gente. Sin
embargo, decidimos lanzar todo según lo planeado.
Sois una banda con más de diez años en los
escenarios y con cuatro discos publicados aunque desconocida para el público
español, contadnos un poco de donde venís y cuales fueron vuestros comienzos.
Sí, así es, no hemos podido difundir nuestra música por vuestro
país, esperemos que cambie pronto la cosa y podamos dar allí algunos conciertos
en cuanto sea posible.
Nuestros comienzos fueron en 2005 en algun pueblo pequeño de la baja
Austria, en ese año yo y algunos ex miembros fundamos Irdorath. Todos éramos
jóvenes y no teníamos grandes metas al principio, pero para mí Irdorath se
convirtió en algo estable en mi vida, por eso nunca me rendí y continué como el
último miembro fundador.
Nosotros, especialmente yo, nunca fuimos solo oyentes o fanáticos del
black metal, por eso, incluso al principio, no era un "true black metal"
o lo que sea. Siempre tuve muchas influencias diferentes de otros géneros y,
por lo tanto, evolucionamos en los últimos 15 años. Yo lo llamaría "black
thrash metal", porque esas son seguramente las mayores influencias. Pero
hey!, estamos en 2020, y hay muchas posibilidades de ver a bandas por Internet.
Por ejemplo, en internet puedes escuchar todo el álbum "The Final
Sin". Si te gustan los ritmos endiablados y agresivos, así como melódicos.
Venís de Austria, un país bastante prolífero
en bandas de black metal, como es la escena en vuestro país es complicado poder
vivir exclusivamente de la música.
La escena del metal en Austria es bastante buena, pero no tan grande.
Hay grandes bandas en todo el país,
pero nos es difícil cruzar la frontera. La
escena austriaca en sí misma no es lo suficientemente grande; creo que en un
país más grande como Alemania podría ser un poco diferente. Pero lo que me
gusta de aquí es la lealtad y el entusiasmo.
Lo que es lamentable es que en la escena anterior cuyo núcleo metalero y
en expansión, sus fans no acabaran siendo Metalheads. Hubo una escena metal bastante
grande de jóvenes en la última década, pero parece que nunca se convirtieron en
fanáticos del metal. Así que tal vez faltan jóvenes en este momento, en
comparación con mis inicios en 2005. ¡Pero espero que eso cambie!
Volviendo a vuestros orígenes, ¿cuales son o
fueron vuestras mayores influencias a la hora de decidiros a montar una banda
de black/thrash metal?
Es realmente difícil de responder, porque, especialmente cuando era
joven, escuchaba mucha música diferente, la mayoría de géneros de metal. Nunca
tuve una banda favorita, para ser honesto. Definitivamente hubo bandas como Sodom, Destruction, Mayhem,
(old)
Behemoth, Vader u Hate que me influenciaron en el pasado y todavía están ahí.
Pero bandas como Iced Earth, Slayer, Immortal y el black metal underground
alemán fueron definitivamente motivaciones para comenzar una banda.
Mis primeros conciertos fueron Deep Purple y The Rolling Stones; mi
padre fue conmigo. Eso me influyó para escuchar "música rock" y luego
comprar una guitarra. Después mi gusto fue cada vez más hacia el género metal. Las primeras bandas en ese entonces eran Iced
Earth, Immortal, In Flames, etc. Más
tarde, cuando comenzamos la banda, había mucho black metal underground. Cada
vez más, también comencé a meterme realmente en las bandas polacas como Vader,
Hate, ...
¿Como veis la escena black metal a nivel
global hoy día? Paises como el vuestro o Polonia son punteros en bandas de
black metal, no solo hay que mirar a paises como Noruega o Suecia.
No creo que Austria sea puntera tal vez Alemania. Pero como dije
antes, la escena black metal austriaca aún es pequeña en comparación con otros
países.
A nivel mundial, creo y noto que el black metal se acepta cada vez más
en todo el entorno metal, y eso me gusta. Por supuesto,
todavía hay esa pequeña escena de "True black metal" que se limita,
pero no nos vemos como parte de eso.
Vemos a la mayoría de la escena black metal y a nosotros integrada en la
escena metal y eso me gusta. La mentalidad de ahora de muchas bandas black es
muy abierta a otros géneros e influencias. Lo puedes ver en festivales donde las
bandas de black metal tocan en grandes escenarios y están en los puestos altos
de los carteles. Creo que este tipo de música metal recibe cada vez más
atención.
Creo que el black metal pierde este toque de música "solo
underground". Se acepta cada vez más en la escena principal del heavy
metal, ¡lo que es perfecto!
Lo que no me gusta y me aburre y me pone un poco molesto es que tantas
bandas tratan de hacer cosas rituales y míticas en el escenario. Usar un atrezo y quedarse quieto en el escenario con un poco de humo no es un ritual. Se
ha convertido en un estandar durante todos años, me gusta más un espectáculo
honesto y poderoso que intentar crear algo así. Eso no es autentico, pero creo que
esto también desaparecerá tarde o temprano, conozco a muchas personas que sienten lo
mismo.
Estais a punto de sacar vuestro quinto álbum
"The Final Sin" deciros que ya lo hemos esuchado y es un auténtico
cañonazo, contadnos un poco como fue el proceso de composición y grabacion. ¿Como
es vuestra manera de componer, trabajais todos a partir de varias, una sola
idea, etc, etc.?
Muchas gracias por ese cumplido.
Las composiciones y letras están hechas por mí y nuestro bateria Thomas.
Somos el centro de Irdorath y responsables de todo lo que sucede en un sentido
creativo.
Grabamos todo en el estudio de confianza en Austria y viajamos a Polonia
para mezclar y masterizar en el Hertz Studio (Vader, Hate, Decapitated ...). Decirte
que fue un momento difícil pero también satisfactorio. Pasamos mucho tiempo trabajando
en esas canciones, así que estamos muy contentos con el resultado.
Normalmente empiezo con el concepto de una canción y luego trabajamos
juntos en la música y la letra hasta que ambos estamos satisfechos. Hicimos
mucha preproducción hasta que todo estuvo listo para el estudio.
Para mí siempre es diferente, cómo me meto en una idea de canción. A
veces ya hay algo en mi mente y solo tengo que traducirlo en una canción, a veces
interrumpo y tengo algunos riffs que me gustan y hago una canción con eso.
Normalmente, Thomas tiene muchas ideas para mis canciones y comenzamos a
trabajarlas una y otra vez.
Cuando escribo canciones, nada está listo después de una hora, somos muy
autocríticos. Esto disco nos llevó 1 año y medio para todas
las canciones, letras, líneas vocales, etc.
Como dije, trabajo duro, (risas)
Podeis comentarnos también un poco sobre la
temática del álbum, en un principio escribíais en alemán pero en vuestro tercer
álbum pasasteis al inglés. ¿Os sentís más cómodos
escribiendo en inglés?
Sí, cuando nuestro antiguo cantante
dejó la banda hace mucho tiempo, también me hice cargo de las voces además de
tocar la guitarra y componer. Thomas y yo escribiamos las letras, y nos sentíamos mucho más cómodos con el uso del inglés sobre el alemán, también tiene la
ventaja de que más personas entienden de qué estamos hablando y eso es algo
bueno para nosotros.
"The Final Sin" es el último
capítulo de nuestra trilogía que comenzamos con "I Am Risen". Es de
alguna manera un análisis crítico y cínico y una reflexión sobre la religión,
el cristianismo y la miseria que trae a la humanidad sobre sí misma y el mundo.
"El pecado final" en nuestro concepto es el último golpe del Cristo
renacido para borrar lo divino y, con eso, dar a la humanidad otra oportunidad
de actuar mejor en el futuro, sin el engaño de una creencia falsa y la
corrupción de las instituciones llamadas la iglesia católica u otras confesiones.
De cara a vuestros fans, ¿Qué es lo que va a encontrar en
vuestro nuevo álbum, y por qué debería comprarlo?
Encontrarán la creación de músicos
honestos, que evolucionaron su estilo y visión del black / thrash metal durante
15 años y muchos resultados.
Pueden esperar un sonido potente con una buena
mezcla entre las partes rápidas y las melodías. Pero os lo ponemos fácil, puedes encontrar nuestra música on line, en youtube, en nuestra página web, en
portales de streaming, etc., así que echa un vistazo, si te gusta lo que
escucha, cómpralo y déjanos un mensaje.
Recientemente habeis fichado por el sello Art
Gates Records que será quien edite vuestro nuevo álbum, como fue el contacto
con ellos, conocíais antes a este sello.
Conocíamos a AGR por algunos camaradas austriacos y escuchamos que
son muy entusiastas y buenos trabajadores. Entonces decidimos enviarles
material promocional. Y poco después firmamos con ellos. Después de eso,
siempre hemos tenido muy buenas comunicación. Estamos felices de que nos tengan
a bordo.
Especialmente ahora con la pandemia de Covid-19 es difícil hacer una
buena promoción. Todos nuestros conciertos se han cancelado y así
sucesivamente. ¡Pero seguimos avanzando y trabajamos con ellos en nuestros
objetivos!
¿Hábeis tocado alguna vez en España? Supongo
que estareis deseando presentar en directo vuestro nuevo álbum por todo el
mundo.
Lamentablemente aún no. Pero volveremos a extender nuestras alas para
comenzar a tocar tan pronto como sea posible nuevamente en todo el mundo. Y,
por supuesto, ¡España también es uno de nuestros objetivos!
Estamos viviendo momentos dificiles y todas
las giras se están cancelando o posponiendo, ¿cual es el futuro inmediato de la
banda. Hay bandas que están haciendo live streaming para poder promocionarse ya
sea vendiendo el concierto o accediendo al merchandising de la banda. ¿Lo veis como una
opción?
Sí, son tiempos muy dificiles.
Tuvimos que cancelar muchos conciertos geniales que ya estaban cerrados y
todos los demás trabajos en giras, etc., se pararon. Con lo que tenemos que
empezar de nuevo.
Decidimos poner todo lo grabado de forma
gratuita en youtube y también tenemos algunas cosas planeadas para los próximos
meses hasta que podamos dar conciertos nuevamente. Asó que seguidnos en los

How is the release of the new singles being received?
The feedback to our new record “The Final Sin”
from the media and our fans is very good so far, we cannot complain about that.
Also, the release of our singles and videos before
the release was quite good. Although a lot of people were distracted from all
the problems around the Covid – 19 crises. But nevertheless, we decided to
release everything as planned.
You are a band with more than ten years on stage and with four albums
published although unknown to the Spanish public, tell us a bit about where you
came from and what were your beginnings.
Yeah that´s right, we could not spread our
music to your country, we hope that will change soon and that we are able to
hit some stages in Spain, as soon as it is possible of course…
Our beginnings were in 2005 in some small villages
of lower Austria, in that year I and some former members founded Irdorath. We
were all young and did not have big goals in the beginning, but for me Irdorath
became a stable thing in my life, that´s why I never gave up and continued even
as last founding member.
We, especially I, were never only black metal
listeners or fans, that´s why, even in the beginning, it was no “true black
metal” or whatever. I had always a lot of different influences from other
genres and so we evolved our own thing over the past 15 years. I would call it
“black thrash metal”, because those are surely the biggest influences. But hey,
we are living in 2020, there are a lot of possibilities to check out a band on
the internet. For example, here you can stream the whole “The Final Sin”. So,
if you are into driving rhythms and aggression as well as a lot of melodies.
You come from Austria, a fairly prolific country in black metal bands,
how is the scene in your country, is it difficult to live exclusively from
music?
I would
not say difficult, I think it is almost impossible to live from this kind of
music.
The metal scene in Austria is kind of good, but not
that big. There are great bands all around the country, but it seems hard for
all of us to exit some borders. The Austrian scene itself is not big enough; I
think in a larger country like Germany it might be a little different.
But what I like is the loyalty and the enthusiasm.
What is pity is, that the former and spreading
metal core scene and their fans did not grow into metalheads. There was quite a
big scene of young metal-core listeners in the past decade, but it seems like
that they never grew up to metal fans at all. So maybe there is a lack of
youngsters right now, compared to my beginnings in 2005. But I hope that will
change!
Going back to your origins, what are or were your main influences? Which
bands made you decide to start a black / thrash metal band?
This is really hard to answer, because,
especially when I was a youngster, I listened to a lot of different music, most
in the metal genres. I never had THAT favourite band, to be honest.
Definitively there were bands like Sodom,
Destruction, Mayhem, (old) Behemoth, Vader or Hate that influenced me in the
past and are still there. But bands like Iced Earth, Slayer, Immortal as well
as German underground black metal were definitively motivations, to start a
band.
My first live shows were Deep Purple and The
Rolling Stones; my father went with me there. That influenced me to listen to
“rock music” and later to buy a guitar. Afterwards my taste went more and more
in the metal genre. The first bands back then were Iced Earth, Immortal, In
Flames and so on. Later, at the time we started the band, a lot of underground
black metal was present. More and more I also started to really get into the
Polish bands like Vader, Hate, ...
How do you see the black metal scene globally today? Countries like
yours or Poland are leaders in black metal bands, not only do you have to look
at countries like Norway or Sweden.
I do not think that Austria has that
leader part, maybe you mean Germany. But as said before, the Austrian (black)
metal scene is still small compared to other countries.
Globally I think and notice, that black metal
gets more and more accepted in the whole metal genre, and that is what I really
like. Of course, there is still that small “true black metal” scene that limits
itself, but I do not see us as part of that.
I see us and most of the black metal scene
now integrated in the whole metal scene, and I like that very much. Many bands
are now very open minded to other genres and influences. You see that also on
festivals, where black metal bands hit the big stages and get also good
positions in the line-up, very great. So, I think that kind of metal music gets
more and more attention. I think,
black metal loses this touch of “only underground” music. It gets more and more
acceptance in the main heavy metal scene, what is perfect!
What I do not like and makes me always a little
more upset and bored is, that so many bands try to make some mythical and
ritual – like stuff, especially on stage. Wearing a frock and standing still on
stage with a little smoke is not a ritual. I think that became to standard in
the last years. I am more into a honest and powerful show than trying to create
something, that is not there. That is not authentical. But I think this will
also disappear sooner or later, because meanwhile I know a lot of people that
feel the same.
You are about to release your fifth album "The Final Sin" ,
tell you that we have already heard it and it is a blast, tell us a little
about the composition and recording process. How is your way of composing, do you all work from several ideas, a single idea, etc, etc.?
Thank you very much for that compliment.
The compositions and lyrics are all made by me and
our drummer Thomas. We are the center of Irdorath and responsible for all what
happens in a creative meaning.
We recorded everything in the studios of our trust
in Austria and again travelled for the mixing and mastering to Hertz Studio in
Poland (Vader, Hate, Decapitated…). I can tell you it was a hard but also
satisfying time. We spend a lot of work in that songs, so we are very happy now
with the result.
As mentioned before, Thomas and I are
writing all the songs.
Normally I start with a concept of a song and
then we work together on the music and the lyrics until we are both satisfied.
We did a lot of preproduction until everything was ready for studio.
For me it is always different, how I get into
a song idea. Sometimes there is already something in my mind and I only have to
translate it into a song, sometimes I jam and have some riffs I like and make a
song out of that. Normally Thomas then has a lot of ideas to my songs and we
start to work them over again and again.
When I write songs, nothing is ready after an
hour, we are very self-critical. So for that record I think it took us 1 1/2
year to be happy with all the songs, lyrics, vocal lines and so on.
As I said, hard work, haha.
You can tell us a bit about the theme of the album, at first you wrote
in German but on your third album you changed to English. Do you feel more
comfortable writing in English?
Yes, when our former singer left the band long ago, I also took over the
vocals beside playing guitar and composing. The lyrics then were written by Thomas
and me, and we were much more comfortable with using English over German, it
also has the advantage, that more people understand what we are talking about
and that is a good thing for us.
“The Final Sin” is the last chapter of our trilogie
we started with “I Am Risen”. It is somehow a critical and cynical analysis and
reflection about religion, Christianity and the misery that brings humanity
over themself and the world. “The Final Sin” in our concept is the last strike
of the reborn Christ to erase the divine and with that, giving the humankind
another chance to act better in the future, without the mislead of a false
believe and the corruption of the institutions called the catholic church or
other confessions.
Looking to your fans, what will you find on your new album, and why
should they buy it?
They
will find the creation of honest musicians, that evolved their style and vision
of black / thrash metal over 15 years and many outputs.
They can expect a powerful sound with a good mix
between driving parts and melodies. But let us make it easy, you find our music
online on youtube, on our homepage, on streaming portals, etc., so take a
closer look and if you like what you hear, buy our stuff and leave us a
message!!!
You have recently signed with the Art Gates Records label that will
release your new album. How was your contact with them? Did you know this label
before?
M.: We knew AGR before from some Austrian
comrades and we heard that they are very enthusiastic and good working. So we
decided to send them promo material. And soon after we head that deal.
After that it was and is always a very good
communication, we are happy that they have us on board.
Especially now with the Covid-19 pandemic it
is hard to make good promotion. All our shows are cancelled and so on. But we
keep moving forward and work with them on our goals!
Have you ever played in Spain? I suppose you are looking forward to
presenting your new album live all over the world.
Unfortunately not yet. But we will spread
our wings again to start playing as soon as it is possible again around the
world. And then of course also Spain is one of our goals!
We are living difficult times and all the tours are being canceled or
postponed, what is the immediate future of the band? There are bands that are
making live streaming in order to promote themselves either by selling the
concert or by accessing the band's merchandise. Do you see it as an option?
Yes, the times are very difficult. We had to
cancel a lot of great shows that were already booked and all the other work on
tours and so on are stopped. So we have to start anew.
We decided to stream the whole record for free on
youtube and also have some special things planned for the next months until we
can hit the stages again. So keep following us on the online medias for news!
