Entrevista a Of Fire 'somos una banda de directo y queríamos que el álbum sonara como tal'

Death Metal Sueco Old School puro y duro es lo que vienen haciendo desde Suecia 'Of Fire', así que unas semanas antes del lanzamiento de su tercer álbum "Dräparen" (puedes leer aquí la reseña) nuestra compañera Sofía entrevistó a Robin, (vocalista) que gustosamente nos explicó los detalles del nuevo trabajo de la banda.

¡Hola! Muchísimas gracias por la entrevista. Ya mismo vais a sacar
vuestro tercer álbum. ¿De dónde viene el nombre? ¿Podrías explicarnos algo
sobre el arte de la portada, el diseñador, simbolismo, etc?
El nombre “Dräparen” es un
antiguo nombre sueco que significa “lobo”, pero su significado actual es
“asesino”. El material gráfico está diseñado por un hombre ruso increíble llamado
Kirill Semenov.
En el norte del mundo, durante los tiempos de hambruna entre
finales de 1700 hasta finales de 1800 o principios de 1900, era muy duro vivir
en Escandinavia, un mundo pobre y congelado. Si, por ejemplo, tenías vacas, las
protegías con tu vida porque te daban comida. La guerra entre el hombre y el
lobo comenzó aquí. El lobo perdió y casi se extingue. Es comprensible cuando se
trata de protegerse a uno mismo, pero fue demasiado lejos debido a la avaricia
del hombre, y todavía en el S.XXI sigue siendo igual.
El lobo es sagrado y
representa lo salvaje, lo protege, pero ahora el lobo está de nuevo casi
extinto en la zona norte del mundo. O estás de parte de lo salvaje o en contra
de ella. Hay muchas historias sobre “Dräparen”, por eso es un título evidente
para el álbum, al menos para nosotros. Y al ser Kirill de Rusia y de la gran
taiga que nos conecta, pensamos que era la persona adecuada para nosotros.
La temática del álbum es antiguas historias tradicionales de Suecia y
folclore sueco. a la hora de escribir las letras, ¿quién suele escribirlas?
¿Robin, o participan también otros miembros?
Sí, soy yo quien escribe
las letras, pero siempre con la opinión de los otros. La primera canción “Stockholm Blodbad” es un evento que ocurrió aquí en el
casco antiguo de Estocolmo, en 1520. Todavía se puede leer mucho sobre ello y aún
hay señales de lo ocurrido aquí. Cientos de hombres fueron torturados y
asesinados en una plaza y su sangre inundó las calles.
Otra canción, “Satanic
Warfare”, habla sobre cuando las cruzadas cristianas destruyeron nuestras
creencias y cultura paganas, pero no son solo antiguas historias. También hay
historias sobre antiguos trenes fantasma en los túneles de Estocolmo, sobre
nuestra central nuclear nacional “Forsmark”, por ejemplo. Pero en general es
todo antiguo folclore sueco, hechos e historias.
¿Cómo fue la grabación del álbum? ¿Dónde lo grabasteis?
Todo salió sin problemas, lo
grabamos juntos en Estudios Sunlight con Tomas Skogsberg, tal como hicimos con
los otros dos álbumes. A diferencia de las otras ocasiones, esta vez no
estábamos tan preparados, teníamos ideas y más o menos teníamos las letras.
Queríamos dejar que fluyera y componer las canciones según fuera saliendo,
somos una banda de directo y queríamos que el álbum sonara como tal. También fue
por eso por lo que lo grabamos en un estudio en directo. Es la mejor decisión
que hemos tomado. Nos encanta el álbum y estamos muy orgullosos de “Dräparen”.
Tocáis Old School Death Metal Sueco, ¿podéis contarnos qué equipo
usasteis para grabarlo? ¿Os mantenéis fiel al sonido del buzzsaw?
Sí, supongo, pero todos crecimos
tocando en bandas en lugar de yendo a conciertos, y toda la idea de la banda es
hacer algo nuevo y procurar no aferrarnos a etiquetas, sino mantener la buena
esencia de lo antiguo, como el sonido del Boss HM-2 Buzzsaw al máximo. Siempre
vamos a explorar nuevos sonidos ya que nuestras influencias son muy amplias.
Volviendo al pasado, contadnos un poco sobre cómo nació la banda y
sobre vuestras primeras influencias.
La banda al principio era solo un
proyecto, ni siquiera una banda. Yo ni estaba en la banda entonces, me tomé un
año de descanso porque quería centrarme en otras cosas en la vida. Pero escuché
que Jonathan y Anders (nuestro antiguo guitarrista) habían vuelto a tocar, y
eso hizo que quisiera volver a componer música con antiguos amigos. En seguida
compusimos canciones y salió tan bien, que nació OF FIRE. Dimos un concierto en
una sala local y tras eso contactamos con Tomas Skogsberg y empezamos a pensar
en nuestro primer álbum, “Carnage Fever”.
No podemos hablar del Death Metal sueco sin nombrar a bandas como
Entombed, Dismember o Unleashed entre otras. ¿Cómo veis la escena sueca hoy en
día en cuanto a la época en la que surgieron estas bandas?
En realidad no hay nada nuevo en
la escena del Death Metal, es sobre todo volver a usar lo antiguo y, de hecho, los
grupos antiguos vuelven a ser populares. Pero hay algunas bandas en la escena underground
que dan mucho que hablar.
Leímos que Martin (a pesar de haber grabado el álbum) dejó la banda, y
que ya tenéis un bajista nuevo. ¿Cómo ha sido su adaptación?
Sí, Martin no tenía ni tiempo ni
esfuerzos para la banda, tenía otras prioridades como su familia y su carrera
profesional, lo cual respetamos completamente. Aún mantenemos el contacto y no
hay malos rollos. El nuevo chico, “Borka”, ha estado involucrado de forma
interrumpida en la banda durante bastante tiempo. Por ejemplo, actúa como
asesino en nuestro segundo video, “Blasphemy”. Participó como cantante invitado
en la canción “Straight from the grave” en la fiesta de lanzamiento de nuestro
segundo álbum, “Death do us all”, y hemos sido amigos desde siempre. Además,
toca el bajo con nuestros hermanos de Wormwood. Así que se ha adaptado genial,
pega en la banda y es definitivamente la persona que buscábamos. Estamos más que
contentos y es más divertido ahora, nos trajo la energía que necesitábamos y
estamos muy agradecidos de tenerlo en el grupo.
“Dräparen” será vuestro primer álbum bajo el sello Art Gates. ¿Cómo ha
sido trabajar con ese sello español?
Está yendo bien, nos ayudan mucho
con las cosas que no entendemos. Fue un poco difícil entendernos los unos a los
otros, pero ahora va todo bien siempre que haya buena comunicación.
¿Habéis planeado ya un tour?
No, todavía no, pero estamos
trabajando en ello y planeando un tour para este otoño. Hemos estado en Europa
del Este, Rusia y Alemania antes, pero queremos ir por centro Europa y por la
parte oeste esta vez.
Nunca habéis tocado en España. ¿Tenéis pensado venir en el futuro?
Nos encantaría visitar España y
desatar un poco de la furia del Death Metal sueco. Como he dicho antes, estamos
trabajando en un tour y esperamos que España nos quiera, ya veremos

Hello! Thank you very much for this interview.
You are close to release your third album, so we were wondering where the name
of your album comes from and if you could explain a bit about the artwork,
designer, symbolism...?
The name “Dräparen” is an old Swedish name for the
Wolf; its actual meaning is the slayer. The artwork is made by a marvellous
Russian guy called Kirill Semenov. In the north part of the world, during the
starvation time between the late 1700s onto the end of 1800s, early 1900s, living
in Scandinavia was very hard, a frozen poor world.
Back then, if you had some
cows, for example, you guarded them with your life because they provided you
with food. The war between man and wolf started here, and the wolf lost and was
almost extinct. It’s understandable as far as protecting your head at the time,
but it went too far. Men got too greedy and now in the 2000s it’s still the
same. The wolf is sacred and stands for the wild, protecting it. But now the
Wolf is almost extinct once again here in the north part of the world. Either
you stand with the wild or you are against it. There are many stories about
“Dräparen” therefore it’s an obvious title for the album, at least for us. And
Kirill being from Russia and the Great Taiga, which connects us, was just right
guy for us.
The theme of the album is about old
traditional Swedish stories and Swedish folklore. When writing the lyrics, who
is the person that usually writes them, do the rest of the members
participate too?
Yes, it’s me who writes the lyrics, but I always
take into account the opinion of the guys. Yes, that is mostly correct.
The
first song “Stockholms blodbad” is an actual event that took place here in the
Old Town of Stockholm, 1520. You can still read a lot about it and there are
still signs of it left here today.
A couple of hundred men were tortured and
killed on a square and the blood flooded the streets. Another song, “Satanic
Warfare”, is about when the Christian Crusades destroyed our pagan beliefs and
culture. But it’s not only old stories. There are also stories about old ghost
trains in the subways of Stockholm, about our national nuclear plant
"Forsmark", for example. But it’s all mostly about old Swedish
folklore, happenings, and stories.
How was the recording of the album, where did
you recorded it?
It went smooth, we recorded it in Studio Sunlight
together with Tomas Skogsberg, as we also did with the other two previous
albums. Unlike before, we were not so prepared this time, we just had ideas,
and roughly done with the lyrics. We wanted to just go with the flow and
arrange the songs as it went along, we are a live band and wanted the album to
feel alive. Also cause of that we recorded it live in the studio. It’s the best
decision we have ever made. We love the album and we are damn proud of
"Dräparen"
You play Old School Swedish Death Metal: What
equipment did you use to record it? Are you faithful to the Buzzsaw sound?
Yes, I suppose, but we all grew up playing in bands
rather than going to shows, and the whole idea of the band is to make something
new, not being hard on being labelled, but keeping the good stuff from the old,
like the Boss HM-2 buzzsaw with everything on max. We will always explore new
grounds as our influences are very divided.
Going back in time, tell us a bit about how
the band was born and what your first influences were.
The band was at first just a project, in fact not even
a band. I wasn’t even in a band at the time, I had a year off because I just
wanted to focus in other things in life. But i heard from Jonatan and Anders
(our previous guitarist) that they have started playing again, and that
triggered me to start making music again with my old friends. We instantly
wrote songs and it felt so right, so OF FIRE was born. We did a gig at a local
venue and after that we contacted Tomas Skogsberg and started planning our
first album, "Carnage fever”.
We can’t talk about Swedish Death Metal
without naming bands like Entombed, Dismember or Unleashed among others. How do
you see the Swedish scene today regarding the time in which these bands were
born?
There’s nothing new in the death metal scene really,
it’s mostly reusing the old and, in fact, old bands are popular again. But
there are some bands in the underground that are the source of much talk.
We read that Martin (despite recording the
album) left the band, and that you already have a new bass player. How was his
adaptation to the band?
Yes, Martin no longer had the time and effort for the
band, he had other priorities like his family and working career which we fully
respect.
We still have contact and there is no bad blood. Our new guy,
"Borka", has been involved in the band on and off for quite a while.
For example, he plays a role in our second video "Blasphemy" as a
killer. He did guest vocals on a song "Straight from the grave" at
our release party for our second album, "Death do us all", and been
friends with us since like forever.
He also plays the bass with our fellow
brothers in Wormwood. So he has adapted really good, he fits in the band right
away and he is totally the guy for us. We are more than happy and its more fun
now, he brought just the right energy into the band and we are very grateful
for finally having him in the band.
“Dräparen” will be your first album with Art
Gates Records. How was working with this Spanish label?
Its working good, they are very helpful with things we
don’t understand. It was a little hard to understand each other but now it’s
working great while we have a good communication.
Have you planned a tour already?
No, not yet, but we are working on it and planning to
go on tour this Autumn. We have been to East Europe, Russia and Germany before
and we want to go for the central or West side of Europe this time.
You have never been to Spain on tour, will you
come to Spain in the future?
We would love to visit Spain and unleash some Swedish
death metal fury! As said before, we are working on a tour and hopefully Spain
wants us, we'll see.
